The European Union and the United Arab Emirates wrapped up their Fourth High-Level Political Dialogue in Abu Dhabi last Monday, marking a major step towards enhancing diplomatic and economic cooperation between Europe and the Gulf.
Notably, the discussions signalled a sea change in bilateral ties, as both parties committed to stepping up cooperation on urgent regional and international security issues in addition to trade.
H.E. Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and the EU Foreign Minister's Envoy, and Olof Skoog, Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service for Political Affairs, co-chaired the discussion, which highlighted the two partners' increasing strategic alignment in the face of changing global dynamics.
Moreover, the historic announcement of the start of free trade talks between the EU and the UAE was one of the meeting's most anticipated outcomes. This move is expected to increase investment flows and deepen economic integration between the two regions.
The decision, according to officials, is a “win-win” for both sides, reflecting their common interests in innovation, stability, and sustainable development.
According to Skoog in a joint press statement, building resilience together — economically, politically, and regionally' is the goal of the EU-UAE partnership.
Approaching a Strategic Partnership Contract
Both the EU and the UAE are in favour of an EU-UAE Strategic Partnership Agreement, which would enhance cooperation in various areas such as foreign policy, defence, energy transition, climate action, and technological innovation, beyond trade.
Likewise, the dialogue emphasised the value of multilateral cooperation, stressing the necessity of respecting international law and working together in international organisations such as the G20 and the UN.
EU and UAE officials shared opinions on several conflict areas and unstable situations during a comprehensive conversation on regional affairs:
The EU and UAE have discussed strengthening their relationship with the GCC ahead of the UAE's upcoming GCC presidency, building on their commitments at the EU-GCC Summit in October 2024, which focused on trade, energy, and regional security.
Furthermore, a mutual commitment to furthering trust and collaboration—not just between the EU and the UAE, but also in support of greater regional stability and prosperity—was made at the end of the discussion.
In short, the growing EU-UAE partnership could be a vital link between the East and the West in the face of the world's most pressing geopolitical issues. It is based on shared values as well as common interests.
