According to forecasters, a third heatwave may occur later this week following thunderstorms that bring heavy rain, lightning, and hail to much of eastern England on Sunday.
Notably, widespread rainfall of 15 to 25 mm (0.6-1 inch) is expected in an area that extends almost to Hull in the north and Princes Risborough in the west, as well as throughout eastern England. This includes all of East Anglia and as far south as the coasts of East Sussex and Kent.
What Yellow Weather Warnings Signify
With a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Met Office says that most of the rain could fall in any location in two or three hours.
Remarkably, rainfall is expected to move eastward across the area, with areas experiencing frequent thunderstorms potentially receiving up to 40-60 mm (1.6-2.4 inches) of precipitation, the warning continues.
When a yellow warning is issued, there is a good chance that spray, standing water, and/or hail will impact driving conditions. This could result in longer distances for buses and cars, as well as delays for some trains.
Additionally, lightning strikes could harm buildings and structures, floods could damage homes and businesses, and power outages could occur.
Prospects for the UK's Upcoming Days
According to Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey, a front moving across Wales and England first thing “could start to provide some quite intense downpours of rain, particularly heavy around the Humber and Wash regions”.
“That will generally move south-eastwards and break into showers as we head throughout the day – some of those could turn thundery with hail and quite intense downpours of rain,” he informed.
He added that starting on Tuesday, high pressure from the Azores begins to spread throughout the United Kingdom, bringing with it “fewer showers, more sunny spells, and also climbing temperatures” starting in the middle of the week.
Furthermore, the UK may see a third heatwave this summer, with temperatures possibly falling to the low 30s by the end of the week, according to Marco Petagna, a senior meteorologist at the Met Office, who was quoted by ITV News.
Even though Mr. Petagna stated that it “looks like we will meet heatwave criteria again by the end of the week,” he also noted that it is difficult to forecast how long the heatwave will persist.
