The Microsoft executive took some time to explain what Microsoft means by the term, which has been hailed by CEOs and executives throughout the tech sector as the year of agentic AI.
Microsoft is creating AI agents with a small “capability overhang” in reasoning that humans can assign tasks to. Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott believes that as AI agents develop further, they will become more powerful and more affordable to use. He projects that these developments will occur within the next year.
The Next Significant Advancement
During its opening keynote at Build, Microsoft announced a number of AI updates and collaborations pertaining to agentic AI.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced plans to develop tools for an open, “agentic web” at scale, including cloud computing tools through its Microsoft Azure platform. The company showcased new AI features on Windows, Office, Azure, and other platforms during a keynote.
Microsoft has introduced its Azure SRE agent for site reliability engineering, which will be integrated into GitHub Copilot. The agent aims to provide a reliable AI peer for complex tasks, reducing pain points for developers, such as late-night website issues.
Additionally, Nadella announced the development of a full coding agent integrated into GitHub, transforming Copilot from a pair programmer to a peer programmer, capable of autonomously completing tasks such as issue assignments, bug fixes, and code maintenance.
Microsoft also demonstrated its reach with virtual appearances by a who's who of AI CEOs, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Tesla and xAI CEO Elon Musk, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
Altman discussed the evolution of agentic AI and the launch of Codex, an AI startup's new agent designed to assist programmers in writing code, fixing bugs, and running tests, describing it as “true software engineering task delegation.”
Moreover, OpenAI CEO highlighted the concept of virtual teammates, enabling users to assign tasks and work on advanced tasks, enhancing productivity and collaboration. Further, he praised the internal development of Codex, noting that early adopters quickly changed their workflow and achieved impressive progress, highlighting the remarkable progress made by those who used Codex daily.

Tailoring AI Agents with Company Data
Microsoft plans to expand Azure's AI models to integrate xAI's Grok 3 and Grok 3 Mini, according to Elon Musk, who shared his experiences using Microsoft software and the capabilities of Grok in a pre-recorded interview with Nadella.
Microsoft has introduced “Copilot Tuning” to create agents
using company data, confirming a recent report that the company plans to introduce a new Copilot designed to channel an organisation's knowledge into a Copilot that can “talk, think, and work” like the tenant itself.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the company's plans to incorporate AI into all of its agentic web and software development products, such as Copilot Studio and Microsoft 365 Teams.
During his closing remarks, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that the company is attempting to implement AI in its “full stack” of software development and agentic web products, such as Copilot Studio, Microsoft 365 Teams, and others.
He added, “Ultimately, though, all of this is about creating opportunity to fuel your ambition,” citing a South American startup that developed an app to gamify wellness and a father who used Foundry to expedite the diagnosis of a rare disease affecting his son.
